Gradient Vodka Soda, designed by Mark Rowe and John Eresman, is the world's first alcohol mixed pack that features multiple, gradually reducing alcohol content drinks in one pack. With alcohol percentages ranging from 8% to 2% alc./vol, this innovative packaging concept aims to provide a fun and effective way for people to moderate their alcohol consumption.
The design of Gradient Vodka Soda is centered around a decreasing dot matrix pattern that perfectly matches the gradient dot matrix on the one-of-a-kind six-in-a-line box. This unique concept gives people a visual representation of the decreasing alcohol content as they progress through the pack. By starting with the higher alcohol content drinks and gradually moving towards the lower alcohol content ones, consumers can enjoy a few drinks without letting the night get out of hand.
Key to the production of Gradient Vodka Soda was meticulous Pantone matching across mediums to ensure a seamless match between the shrink sleeve cans and the 24pt beverage grade box. The alignment of the dot matrix grid also took careful planning at all stages of production, resulting in a visually appealing and cohesive design.
The specifications of Gradient Vodka Soda include six sleek 355 mL cans, each with a different alcohol percentage ranging from 8% to 2%. The pack is available in three flavors: Raspberry Lemon, Cucumber Mint, and Lime. The angled perforation from front to back encourages consumers to start at the stronger end and work their way down, further emphasizing the concept of moderation.
Gradient Vodka Soda is designed to be enjoyed from the higher alcohol end to the lower alcohol end. The unique in-line design of the box and the perforated top nudge consumers to drink in the proper order. By starting strong and gradually decreasing their alcohol intake throughout the night, individuals can maintain their blood alcohol levels and enjoy a few drinks without the negative consequences of excessive consumption.
Launched in Canada in August 2021, Gradient Vodka Soda has received an incredible response. With 52 percent of U.S. consumers trying to reduce their alcohol consumption, this innovative design meets the growing demand for new ways to moderate alcohol intake. International exports are scheduled to begin in late 2022, bringing the benefits of Gradient Vodka Soda to a global audience.
The design of Gradient Vodka Soda was not without its challenges. The most difficult aspect of the project was developing a system that allowed each individual can to stand out on its own while still contributing to the overall concept of the product. The gradually reducing dot matrix design solved this issue by creating a visually appealing gradient that remains bright and appealing.
Gradient Vodka Soda has been recognized for its innovative design and contribution to quality of life improvements. The design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category in 2022. This prestigious award is bestowed upon outstanding and creatively ingenious designs that authenticate experience and resourcefulness. Gradient Vodka Soda's unique concept and visually appealing design make it a deserving recipient of this accolade.
With Gradient Vodka Soda, moderation has never been easier or more enjoyable. By offering a fun and visually appealing way to moderate alcohol consumption, this innovative design is making a positive impact on the way we approach drinking. So, next time you're looking for a refreshing and responsible drink, reach for Gradient Vodka Soda and keep your night bright.
